Welcome to the Darwin Fridge Festival

Darwin Community Arts is producing a unique, adventurous and distinctly Darwin community festival at Malak. This Festival involves the whole Darwin community, engages an array of artists (visual artists, performers, graffiti artists, photographers) and brings a sense of identity to the central Malak precinct. The event is the Darwin Fridge Festival. Yes Fridge!

the When and Where

The Darwin Fridge Festival is on 6pm - 8pm Friday 20th and 10am - 5pm Saturday 21st August 2010. It will be held at Malak, in the area surrounding the Malak Shopping Centre (where Darwin Community Arts is based). The area includes a car park with many power outlets, an underground car park storage area, and the Chambers Crescent Theatre.

Community feedback

This festival is produced by Darwin Community Arts. An organisation which, quite simply, supports the local community to create art and cultural life. If you have any ideas or suggestions for the Darwin Fridge Festival we haven't thought of, we would love to hear from you. We want the Darwin community to participate in the development of the festival and help steer it to a great event, and hopefully a long future.

Esky Market

Want to use your creativity to make some extra $$$. The Darwin Fridge Festival is hosting an Esky Market where artists can use their creativity to transform and decorate esky's and sell them on the day to the public. Who wouldn't want to own an esky with it's own distinct personality? Contact us to find out more about the Esky Market.

Eco Expo

The Darwin Fridge Festival aims to explore the ecological footprint of fridges and issues such as;
- Saving energy thus reducing the amount of greenhouse gases that power consumption produces by replacing fridge and freezer seals.
- Managing wastes from discarded fridges which are hazardous to the environment.
- Reducing landfill of white goods by providing alternative uses for old fridges.
- How to reduce waste of energy by correct placement and circulation of the fridge.
- Considering the amount of fridges used in households, schools and business, and alternatives to save energy.

Community Art Workshops

The Community Art Workshops are an opportunity for local schools to participate in the Festival. Students turn one of their school fridge into a piece of art. The fridge will be on display at the Darwin Fridge Festival for 2 days, and returned to the school after to become a great piece of public art work for the school. So far 15 local schools have expressed interest in being involved, and we encourage community organisations to also register their interest.

Volunteers wanted

The Darwin Fridge Festival is now seeking volunteers to help in a variety of ways. Whether you are an artist or just want to help behind the scenes, please contact us now.

We are currently seeking volunteers to help us transform some fridges which will be used to help publicise the festival around Darwin.
