Darwin Fridge Festival 2011

In 2011, the Darwin Fridge Festival will engage the wider NT community, allowing more people to participate in the festival and more of the public to view the fridge art.

The festival also has a strong recycling focus and in 2011 will be held during National Recycling Week in November. It will also feature as part of the Darwin City Council’s Recycled Art Festival program.

Festival participants will have the opportunity to display their artwork in public places such as libraries, schools, shopping centre, and businesses. The Festival coordinator will connect the artists with the public places throughout the year, and promote the art works through this website.

In 2011, the festival will expand to incorporate both physical showcases as well as a dynamic on-line component. Essentially, the online component will operate as a global exhibition. Artists and communities around the NT will paint fridges, then photograph them for display online.

In the lead up to the festival, there will be workshops in not only painting fridges but also creating all things fridge - magnets, eskies and stubbie holders.

An artists in school co-ordinator will be employed by the festival to work with artists and place them into schools and communities to facilitate the creation of great and vibrant fridge art.

Already schools, volunteers and artists have expressed interest in being involved in 2011, and the festival looks forward to continuing to grow and reach NT wide.

The Darwin Fridge Festival 2011 will have a focus on utilising the web to promote the art work and connect with the community. An online exhibition will be lauched allowing artists from all over the NT to showcase their fridge art to the world.

This is such a uniquely NT Festival and has captured the curiosity, humour and passion of people around the country. We hope you can come along for the ride!
